Aksu-Jabagly Nature Reserve

As the oldest nature reserve in Central Asia, this mountainous region is a biodiversity hotspot. It is renowned for its population of the elusive snow leopard, brown bears, and a rich diversity of alpine flora and fauna.
Access. Located in the Turkistan Region, visitors typically access the area through the village of Jabagly, where local guides and horse-trekking services are available.
Notes. Strict regulations apply; visitors must be accompanied by park rangers or certified guides.
Ile-Alatau National Park

Bordering the city of Almaty, this park protects the rugged slopes of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains. It is a vital habitat for the Tien Shan brown bear, Siberian ibex, and the rare snow leopard, which is the park's iconic symbol.
Access. Easily accessible from Almaty via public transport or car to various trailheads, though deep wilderness areas require multi-day trekking with experienced local guides.
Notes. Snow leopards are extremely rare and elusive; sightings are highly unlikely, but the park remains a key site for mountain wildlife.
Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve

This UNESCO World Heritage site is a critical wetland habitat, famous for hosting the northernmost nesting population of pink flamingos in the world. Visitors come to witness vast flocks of migratory birds, including pelicans and cranes, against the backdrop of the expansive Kazakh steppe.
Access. Located near Nur-Sultan, the reserve is best explored via guided 4x4 tours or organized birding excursions that provide access to designated observation points.
Notes. Best visited between May and September; permits are required for entry into the core protected zones.
Ustyurt Nature Reserve

This remote reserve protects the unique desert plateau landscape of the Ustyurt. It is a critical refuge for the Ustyurt mouflon, caracal, and the endangered saiga antelope, which migrates across these arid plains.
