The vibe
Spotting rare desert mammals and migratory birds against ancient canyons feels more intimate than a savanna safari. Spring and early autumn bring the most active wildlife and moderate temperatures. Visitors often join small guided walks or obtain a park ticket and wander at their own pace, resulting in a low‑key, nature‑focused experience.

Dana Biosphere Reserve

As Jordan's largest nature reserve, Dana spans diverse ecosystems from Mediterranean forests to arid deserts. It is a critical habitat for the endangered Nubian ibex, Syrian serin, and various raptors, offering a rugged landscape for wildlife enthusiasts.
Access. Accessible via the village of Dana; guided hiking tours are the primary way to spot wildlife within the reserve.
Notes. Best visited in spring for bird migration and blooming flora; guides are mandatory for most trails.
Shaumari Wildlife Reserve

This reserve was established to protect and breed endangered desert species, most notably the Arabian oryx. It serves as a successful reintroduction site for the oryx, as well as Somali ostriches and Persian onagers.
Access. Located near Azraq; visitors can take guided safari-style tours through the reserve to view the animals in a controlled, semi-wild environment.
Notes. The reserve is managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN); pre-booking tours is highly recommended.
