Golestan National Park

Golestan is Iran's oldest national park, featuring diverse ecosystems ranging from temperate forests to arid steppes. It is famous for its population of Persian leopards, brown bears, and large herds of red deer and wild boar.
Access. The park is accessible via the main highway connecting Gorgan to Bojnurd, with several designated visitor centers and ranger stations offering entry permits and guided trekking options.
Notes. Hiking is restricted to marked trails; visitors are advised to maintain distance from large predators and travel with experienced rangers.

This desert region is known for its unique wildlife adapted to the harsh salt flats and sand dunes. It is a prime location for observing desert foxes, sand cats, and various species of reptiles and raptors in their natural habitat.
Access. Accessible by road from Yazd or Isfahan, with local desert camps providing 4x4 excursions into the protected zones for wildlife observation.
Notes. Extreme temperatures in summer make spring and autumn the only viable times for wildlife observation.

This narrow peninsula separating the Caspian Sea from the Gorgan Bay is a critical wetland habitat for migratory birds. It is world-renowned for hosting vast flocks of flamingos, pelicans, and various species of ducks and geese during the winter months.
Access. Visitors can access the refuge via the city of Behshahr, where local guides and birding tours can be arranged to navigate the protected coastal trails.
Notes. Peak birding occurs from late autumn through early spring when migratory populations are at their highest.

As one of Iran's most important protected areas, this vast desert landscape is the primary sanctuary for the critically endangered Asiatic cheetah. Travelers visit to spot rare Persian wildlife, including the Persian onager and the goitered gazelle, within a stark and beautiful arid ecosystem.
Access. Access requires specialized 4x4 vehicles and mandatory permits from the Department of Environment in Shahrud; hiring a local guide is essential for navigation and wildlife tracking.
Notes. Best visited during the cooler months of autumn and spring; strictly follow guide instructions to avoid disturbing the fragile cheetah population.
