This UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for its unique post-glacial land uplift and rich marine biodiversity. The area is a vital habitat for grey seals and a wide array of seabirds that nest on the rocky islets.
Access. Boat tours and guided wildlife excursions depart from Vaasa during the summer months.
Notes. Seal watching requires maintaining a respectful distance to avoid flushing the animals from their resting rocks.
Liminganlahti Bay

Recognized as one of the most important bird wetlands in Europe, this shallow bay is a critical stopover for thousands of migratory birds. Visitors can observe rare species like the white-tailed eagle and various waterfowl from specialized observation towers.
Access. The Liminganlahti Visitor Centre provides boardwalks and viewing platforms accessible by road from Oulu.
Notes. Peak activity occurs during spring and autumn migration periods.
Nuuksio National Park

Just a short distance from Helsinki, this park is the best place to encounter the rare Siberian flying squirrel, the park's iconic symbol. The dense coniferous forests and rocky terrain also host moose and a variety of woodland birds.
Access. Easily reached by public transport from Helsinki, followed by short walks to the main trailheads.
Notes. The flying squirrel is nocturnal and elusive; visitors are encouraged to respect quiet zones to avoid disturbing wildlife.
Oulanka National Park

Located in the rugged landscapes of Kuusamo, Oulanka is a premier destination for spotting the elusive Eurasian lynx, brown bears, and golden eagles. The park's diverse taiga forest and river valleys provide a pristine habitat for rare northern species.
Access. Accessible via hiking trails or guided wildlife photography tours originating from Kuusamo.
Notes. Best visited in summer for birding and late autumn for large mammal sightings; follow strict park guidelines regarding bear safety.
Patvinsuo National Park

Known as the land of bears, this park features vast peatlands and old-growth forests that offer one of the best opportunities to see brown bears in their natural habitat. The park is also a haven for cranes and other marshland bird species.
Access. Accessible by car with designated parking areas; guided bear-watching hides are available through local operators.
