The dry season is essential for spotting creatures as they gather near receding water sources. This is a remote, low-traffic experience that requires patience and local guides rather than the high-volume tourism seen in other safari hubs.

Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve

Located in the southwest, this spectacular rainforest is world-renowned for the Dzanga Bai, a forest clearing where large groups of forest elephants gather to drink mineral-rich water. It is one of the few places on Earth where visitors can observe lowland gorillas and forest elephants in their natural habitat.
Access. Access is via light aircraft from Bangui to Bayanga, followed by 4x4 transport into the reserve. Guides are mandatory for all forest treks and bai viewing platforms.
Notes. Best visited during the dry season (December to March). Permits are required for gorilla tracking and bai access; strict health protocols are in place to protect primates.

This vast UNESCO World Heritage site in the north features a mix of savanna and wetlands, supporting populations of black rhinoceros, cheetahs, and large herds of antelope. It is a classic African savanna landscape that provides a rare glimpse into the region's diverse wildlife before the impact of widespread poaching.
Access. Extremely remote; accessible primarily by chartered bush planes or long-duration 4x4 expeditions from the capital. Local park rangers provide necessary security and guidance.
