The vibe
Observing wildlife here feels intimate and raw, focusing on the quiet observation of primates and birds in dense, misty forest environments. The dry season is the only practical time to visit, as the trails become nearly impassable once the heavy rains arrive. It is a low-key, DIY-style encounter where you are far removed from the mass-tourism safari circuits found elsewhere on the continent.
A standard park entry permit is required for all forest reserves.

As the largest national park in Burundi, Rurubu protects a vast expanse of savanna and wetland ecosystems along the Rurubu River. It is home to diverse wildlife, including antelopes, buffalo, and a wide array of bird species that thrive in the riverine grasslands.
Access. Accessible via 4x4 vehicles with local guides who can navigate the park's interior tracks.
Notes. The park is best visited during the dry season when wildlife congregates near the riverbanks.
