The vibe
The protected forests of Armenia host rare birds and mammals, a quieter wilderness compared to larger national parks. Spring to autumn is ideal for birdwatching, while winter reveals mammals in the snow. Visitors are usually solo or in small groups, and a park permit is required for entry.

Access. Easily accessible by road from Dilijan town; numerous marked trails allow for independent or guided wildlife trekking.

One of the oldest protected areas in the world, this rugged landscape is a sanctuary for the elusive Caucasian leopard, brown bears, and bezoar goats. Its dramatic canyons and juniper forests offer a rare glimpse into the wild biodiversity of the Armenian Highlands.
Access. Accessible via 4x4 tours from Yerevan; visitors must obtain permits from the reserve administration and are typically accompanied by local guides.
Notes. Best visited in spring or autumn; strict adherence to guide instructions is required for safety and wildlife protection.
Lake Arpi National Park

This high-altitude wetland is a vital stopover for migratory birds and home to a diverse array of waterfowl. The surrounding steppe landscape provides a unique habitat for rare species, making it a premier destination for ornithologists.
Access. Located in the Shirak Province; best reached by private transport from Gyumri, with local guides available for birding excursions.
Notes. The area is quite remote; summer is the best time to visit for bird sightings.
