Surfing in Lithuania
Including Curonian Spit (Nida/Preila), Melnragė, and Palanga Beach. On the map.
The vibe
Surfing the Baltic here feels like catching modest, rolling swells that break against wide, sandy stretches, delivering a gentle ride rather than a high‑adrenaline barrel. The most reliable wind‑generated waves arrive in late autumn, especially November, when storms stir the sea. The beaches host a small community of learners and seasoned locals, so the lineup is friendly and far from crowded.

The Curonian Lagoon side of the spit offers vast, shallow, flat-water conditions perfect for kitesurfing and wingfoiling. It is widely considered the premier destination for wind-powered board sports in the country due to the reliable wind funneling effect.
Access. Accessible via ferry from Klaipėda to Smiltynė, then by road down the spit. Kitesurfing schools are established in Nida and offer lessons and gear rentals.
Notes. Protected national park area; kitesurfing is restricted to designated zones to preserve the environment.

Melnragė is the primary surf hub in Lithuania, offering consistent beach breaks along the Baltic Sea coast. The spot is popular among local surfers for its accessible waves that work well with the prevailing westerly winds.
Access. Located just north of the Klaipėda port entrance, it is easily reachable by car or public transport from the city center. Surf schools and rental shops operate seasonally near the beach.
Notes. Conditions are highly dependent on wind direction; best during autumn and spring storms.

Access. Located in the heart of the main resort town, easily accessible by foot or bike. Multiple seasonal surf and kite schools operate along the main beach strip.
Notes. Crowded during peak summer weekends; best to surf early morning or during the off-season.
