Surfing in Cook Islands
Including Rutaki Passage. On the map.
The vibe
Surfing here feels raw and authentic, with breaks that are often uncrowded and require a bit of local knowledge to navigate the reef passages. The swell is most consistent and powerful during the southern hemisphere winter months. It is an entirely independent experience where you paddle out from the shore, so it is best suited for experienced surfers who are comfortable with reef breaks and self-reliance.

Rutaki Passage offers a consistent and powerful reef break that is highly regarded by local and visiting surfers. The wave is a classic reef break that works best with a south swell, providing a challenging ride for intermediate to advanced surfers.
Access. Access is via boat or a long paddle from the beach at Rutaki. Surf boards and local knowledge can be found at shops in Avarua or Muri Beach.
Notes. Sharp coral reef and strong currents in the passage; respect local surfers and the reef environment.
