The vibe
Surfing here is an unpredictable, seasonal treat that relies on winter swells rolling in from the north to bring life to the outer reefs. It feels raw and unpolished, far removed from the manicured surf schools found in other parts of the world. You will need to be self-sufficient and ready to chase the conditions, as there is no heavy commercial surf culture here.

Cane Garden Bay is a legendary spot that occasionally produces a world-class, hollow right-hand point break when the winter swells are large enough. It is a high-performance wave that draws experienced surfers when conditions align.
Access. Located on the north shore of Tortola; accessible by road. Surfboards are available for rent at nearby beach bars and surf shacks.
Notes. The break is fickle and only works on specific large north swells; watch out for local surfers and reef hazards.

The waters surrounding the North Sound and Necker Island offer excellent conditions for kiteboarding and wingfoiling due to the consistent trade winds. The shallow, protected lagoons provide a perfect playground for riders of all levels.
Access. Accessible via boat charter from Virgin Gorda or Tortola. Specialized kite schools in the BVI offer mobile instruction and gear rental for these specific wind-sport zones.
Notes. Requires boat access to reach the best kite-able sandbars and lagoons.
