The vibe
Surfing on the lake waves is rare, but some lakes produce small, playful waves for beginners. The best time is late summer when lake levels are high. A small local community of surfers meets informally, and no permits are needed. The vibe is laid-back and friendly.

Known as the 'Fjord of the Alps', Achensee provides stunning alpine scenery paired with reliable north and south thermal winds. It is a popular spot for both windsurfers and wingfoilers looking for deep blue water and steady breezes.
Access. Located in Tirol, reachable by car via the A12 Inntal Autobahn or by bus from Jenbach railway station.
Notes. Water temperatures remain cool even in summer; wetsuits are essential.
Ebensee, Traunsee

Traunsee is famous for its reliable thermal wind known locally as the 'Traunsee-Eiserne'. Ebensee hosts a dedicated kite and windsurf scene right on the lake, offering thrilling sessions against a dramatic Alpine backdrop.
Access. Accessible by car via the A1 motorway and Salzkammergut main roads, or by train to Ebensee station.
Notes. Deep water lake with thermal winds that typically kick in around midday. Launch spots can be compact.
Neusiedler See, Podersdorf

Neusiedler See is Austria's premier flat-water destination for windsurfing and wingfoiling. Podersdorf offers consistent thermal winds, shallow warm waters, and a vibrant community with numerous schools and gear rental stations right on the shore.
Access. Easily reached by car from Vienna in about an hour, or via regional trains to Neusiedl am See and local buses.
Notes. Very shallow water makes it beginner-friendly, but strong and sudden gusty winds from the northwest can occur.
