Tracking reef fish along rugged volcanic ledges is deeply tied to daily subsistence living, giving the hunt an authentic, raw edge unlike commercialized sport fishing destinations. The warm months outside the heavy cyclone season offer the calmest water movement for freedive hunting. This is strictly a local affair requiring careful consultation with traditional reef owners rather than booking through a standard resort excursion.

Vanuatu's largest island wraps reef flats, bommies, and channels in warm South Pacific water with trevally, coral trout, snapper, and reef fish. Subsistence spearfishing is woven into village life along Santo's long coastline.
Access. Resort and village boats from Luganville run reef trips; shore entries at select bays with village permission. Infrastructure is basic—bring core gear; guided trips are informal but available through lodges.
Notes. Freediving spearfishing permitted; SCUBA fishing requires a director's licence (not available to casual tourists). Respect marine sanctuaries, tabu areas, and tourist dive sites. Protected species include turtles and marine mammals; size limits apply to lobster.
