The vibe
Spearfishing here is not a standard visitor activity, as strict local maritime laws and conservation rules effectively close recreational harvesting to travelers. Most leisure visitors stick to surface swimming or line fishing from authorized charters instead of hunting underwater. The scene is heavily restricted, making it essentially unavailable for drop-in tourists.

Qatar's northeast coast from Fuwayrit to Madinat ash Shamal combines limestone reefs, sandy channels, and clear shallow water with emperor fish, grouper, snapper, and reef species. Local spearos run both shore entries and short boat trips to nearshore reef patches along this relatively undeveloped stretch.
Access. Obtain a fishing/diving licence and Fisheries Department permission for harpoon-gun use. Active local spearfishing community in Doha connects with north-coast trips; boat hire from Al Shamal or Fuwayrit is the most reliable option for reef patches beyond shore swim range.
Notes. Freediving only—pneumatic (compressed-air) spearguns prohibited. Harpoon/spearfishing banned December–April (spawning closure); hamour (grouper) restricted April–May. Fuwayrit beach closed to public April–August for hawksbill turtle nesting—respect seasonal closures. Stay outside marine reserves and military/petroleum zones.
