Prowling the outer reefs requires serious watermanship and a deep respect for powerful currents that test even seasoned hunters. The winter season provides the most stable ocean conditions for targeting pelagic species in blue water. This is strictly a specialist undertaking here rather than a casual holiday activity, usually arranged directly through experienced local skippers who know the drop-offs intimately.

The stretch from Tofo to Barra features coral reefs, rocky points, and warm Indian Ocean water with kingfish, trevally, reef fish, and seasonal pelagics. Mozambique's south coast is an emerging destination for freedive hunters seeking uncrowded reefs.
Access. Local dhow and ski-boat operators in Tofo and Inhambane run reef trips; shore entries at select rocky points are possible on calm days. Infrastructure is basic—bring core gear.
