Christmas Island (Kiritimati) offers world-class bluewater and outer reef spearfishing along dramatic drop-offs that plunge into the deep Pacific. Spearfishers encounter abundant pelagics, dogtooth tuna, wahoo, and large reef predators in exceptionally clear, remote waters.
Access. Access is largely expedition-style, requiring specialized local fishing charters and guides based on the island who navigate the challenging outer reef passages. Independent DIY shore hunting is dangerous due to strong currents and remoteness, so booking through dedicated sportfishing operators is essential.
Notes. Fishing permits and local council approvals are required for all visitors engaging in fishing or spearfishing activities on Kiritimati. Certain marine conservation zones and traditional fishing grounds are strictly off-limits.
