It is a year-round activity for the dedicated, though the summer months offer the most comfortable conditions for long sessions in the water. You are expected to operate as a respectful guest, adhering to local customs that prioritize sustainability over large hauls.
You must obtain a recreational fishing permit from the local port authority.

These islands feature lush, rocky coastlines and deep, nutrient-rich channels that attract pelagic species and large reef fish. The area is renowned for its diverse structure, ranging from shallow rocky shelves to vertical walls plunging into the abyss.
Access. Shore access is excellent in many areas, though a boat is recommended to reach the outer reefs and deeper drop-offs. Local boat rentals are widely available in Lefkada.
Notes. Spearfishing is permitted for recreational purposes. It is illegal to use scuba gear while hunting. Minimum size and weight limits for specific species (like grouper) are strictly enforced by the Hellenic Coast Guard.
Karpathos Island

Karpathos is a rugged island known for its exposed, deep-water coastline and strong currents that bring in large pelagics. It is a destination for experienced hunters seeking challenging conditions and trophy-sized Mediterranean species.
Access. Mostly DIY. Access requires a rental car to reach remote coastal points or a private boat charter from Pigadia. The island's geography makes shore access challenging but rewarding.
Notes. Recreational spearfishing is legal. No scuba gear allowed. Hunters must adhere to seasonal closures for certain species and respect the no-take zones near archaeological sites.
Naxos & The Small Cyclades

This island chain offers a mix of shallow rocky reefs and deep-water pinnacles. The area is famous for its high visibility and the presence of white bream, dentex, and grouper among the intricate underwater rock formations.
Access. Boat access is highly recommended to reach the smaller, uninhabited islets in the Small Cyclades. Local boat charters are available in Naxos town.
Notes. Spearfishing is legal. Scuba-assisted hunting is forbidden. Ensure you are not in a protected marine area, as some zones around the Cyclades have specific restrictions.
