Snorkeling is not a primary activity here because the river runoff often keeps the coastal waters murky and sediment-heavy. You would struggle to find clear visibility for any meaningful underwater sightseeing along the shoreline. It is better to focus your time on the vibrant birdlife and river excursions instead.

The Tanji Bird Reserve and surrounding mangrove channels offer a unique look at the nursery grounds of the Gambia River estuary. Snorkelers can drift through the tannin-rich waters to observe juvenile fish species and the intricate root systems that define this coastal ecosystem.
Access. Local boat operators from the Tanji fishing village offer guided mangrove tours that include opportunities for snorkeling in calmer, shallower channels.
Notes. Water visibility is highly dependent on tidal movement and seasonal rainfall; best visited during the dry season.
