The vibe
Snorkeling here is an adventurous, DIY pursuit rather than a curated marine park experience, often involving boat trips to rocky outcrops where the currents can be lively. The water is clearest during the calmer months of the dry season when visibility improves significantly. It feels very local and unrefined, so you should be comfortable navigating the water on your own terms without marked buoys or guided trails.

A sprawling network of mangrove‑lined channels offers a unique snorkel experience among tangled roots, juvenile fish, crustaceans and occasional manatees. The water is calm and shallow, perfect for beginners.
Access. Guided mangrove boat tours leave from Puerto El Triunfo; most operators include snorkel gear and a brief safety briefing. Entry is by small motorized launch that can navigate the narrow channels.
Notes. Tidal currents can be strong at high tide; visitors must stay on designated paths to protect nesting birds and the mangrove ecosystem.

Just offshore from the Los Cobanos beach, a rocky reef drops down into clear water, home to sponges, sea fans and schools of snapper and grunt. Visibility is good in the mornings, making it a popular spot for casual snorkelers.
Access. Walk to the small beach and rent snorkel gear from nearby surf shops; a short swim (≈50 m) brings you to the reef. No boat is required.
Notes. The area can be windy and surf can be strong during peak swell, so choose calm days. No fishing allowed within the immediate reef zone.

A gentle reef runs parallel to the sandy shore, showcasing colorful fish and occasional soft corals. Morning calm brings excellent visibility, making it a favorite for relaxed shore snorkeling.
Access. Snorkel gear can be rented at beachfront hostels and surf shops; the reef is reachable by a short swim from the beach. No boat is required.
Notes. Currents increase near the surf break later in the day; early morning visits are recommended. Respect local surfers when entering the water.
