The vibe
The coastal waters are heavily influenced by the massive sediment discharge of the river system, resulting in low visibility that makes recreational snorkeling largely impractical. It is not a destination for clear-water observation, as the silt-heavy currents dominate the near-shore environment year-round. Most visitors skip this activity entirely in favor of inland forest exploration.

Located in the northern part of Lake Kivu, this island offers surprisingly clear freshwater snorkeling in a volcanic crater lake setting. Snorkelers can explore the rocky shoreline where unique cichlid species and other endemic freshwater fish thrive in the calm, protected waters.
