The vibe
Peering beneath the surface along the country's short maritime strip is more of an impromptu dip than a dedicated marine holiday. Mid-summer is the only sensible window when the sea warms up enough for casual floating. It feels completely unmanaged and local, with no rental shacks or guided snorkel tours to speak of—you simply bring your own mask and dive off the rocks.

As the only coastal town in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Neum offers accessible Mediterranean snorkeling along its rocky shoreline. The water is typically calm and clear, allowing snorkelers to observe small schools of fish and interesting rock formations just off the main beaches.
Access. Shore entry is easily accessible from the public beaches in Neum. Rental gear can be found at local beach kiosks and water sports stands during the summer season.
Notes. Be mindful of boat traffic near the designated swimming zones.
Pliva Lakes

The Pliva Lakes near Jajce provide a unique freshwater snorkeling experience in crystal-clear, emerald-green water. Snorkelers can explore the submerged vegetation and the unique limestone topography of the lake floor, which is fed by the Pliva River.
Access. Shore entry is possible from the designated recreational areas around the Big Pliva Lake. Local rental shops offer kayaks and basic water equipment, and snorkeling is a popular way to cool off in the summer.
Notes. Water temperatures can be quite cold, even in summer.
