While the equatorial glaciers of Puncak Jaya have significantly retreated, the high-altitude terrain remains a legendary destination for extreme mountaineering and rare tropical snow exploration. It is the only place in Indonesia where snow-related expeditions occur, attracting seasoned adventurers seeking to traverse the remnants of the Puncak Jaya ice fields.

Access. Access is restricted and requires specialized expedition permits, typically involving a flight to Timika followed by a helicopter or multi-day jungle trek to the base camp.
