The vibe
Wandering through sun-bleached alleys and ancient mud-brick fortresses here feels deeply grounded, far removed from the polished ropes and audio guides of busier tourist circuits. The cooler months from November to February offer the most comfortable climate for exploring expansive desert plains and rugged mountain ranges on foot. You will mostly move at your own pace through quiet historic quarters, occasionally sharing a restored watchtower with a handful of curious travelers.

An important archaeological site and UNESCO World Heritage destination on the coast of Oman, featuring ruins of an ancient medieval port city. Visitors explore the striking Mausoleum of Bibi Maryam and ancient ramparts overlooking the sea.
Access. Reached via a scenic drive along the coast south of Muscat or as an excursion from the nearby coastal city of Sur.
