Late spring and early autumn offer the most pleasant temperatures for wandering these cobblestone streets without the heavy summer tour groups. It is a largely DIY experience where you can lose yourself in the architecture and local atmosphere at your own pace.

This 14th-century fortress is the only intact medieval castle in the Baltic states, standing as a stark and impressive example of Gothic architecture. Surrounded by a deep moat and massive defensive walls, the castle houses the Saaremaa Museum and provides a deep dive into the island's unique history.

Standing directly on the border between Estonia and Russia, Narva Castle offers a dramatic view across the river to the Ivangorod Fortress. This imposing stone structure has been a strategic point of conflict for centuries and now serves as a museum documenting the complex history of the border region.
Access. Accessible by train or bus from Tallinn; the castle is located within walking distance of the Narva train station.

One of the best-preserved medieval city centers in Europe, Tallinn Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site defined by its cobblestone streets, ancient defensive walls, and Gothic spires. Visitors can wander through the labyrinthine alleys of the Upper Town (Toompea) and Lower Town to experience a remarkably intact Hanseatic atmosphere.
Access. Located in the heart of Tallinn, easily accessible by foot from the city's main transport hubs, ferry terminals, and airport.
Notes. The area is very walkable but involves steep cobblestone streets, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
