As Ethiopia's largest lake, Lake Tana offers a unique high-altitude sailing experience across its vast, freshwater expanse. Sailors can navigate between the historic island monasteries, enjoying calm morning winds and expansive views of the Ethiopian highlands.
Access. Sailing is typically organized through local tourism operators in Bahir Dar, who provide traditional-style boats or small-craft charters for lake excursions.
Notes. Best sailed during the dry season from October to March; be aware of sudden afternoon squalls and shallow areas near the Blue Nile outlet.
