Kayaking in Lithuania

Kayaking in Lithuania

Including Aukštaitija National Park, Curonian Spit National Park, and Merkys River Valley. On the map.

The vibe

Paddling along Lithuania’s coastline or inland waterways offers a blend of open‑sea breezes and calm river passages framed by historic towns and marshland, a contrast to tropical mangroves. Late spring through early fall provides calm winds and comfortable temperatures for both sea and river routes. Most kayakers are independent travelers or small groups renting gear, giving the experience a DIY feel with occasional local guides joining for a stretch.

Known as the 'land of a thousand lakes,' this park offers a dense network of interconnected waterways perfect for multi-day touring. Paddlers navigate through pristine pine forests and traditional villages, often linking several lakes via small, scenic streams.

Access. Numerous local outfitters in Palūšė and Ignalina provide kayak rentals, route planning, and shuttle services for multi-day lake-to-lake expeditions.

Notes. Ideal for intermediate paddlers; seasonal water levels in connecting streams can vary.

This UNESCO World Heritage site features a unique landscape of massive sand dunes separating the Baltic Sea from the Curonian Lagoon. Paddlers enjoy the calm, shallow waters of the lagoon, which provide a stark contrast to the wild, open surf of the Baltic coast.

Access. Kayak rentals and guided tours are available in Nida and Juodkrantė. Visitors can launch directly from the lagoon-side beaches.

Notes. Best from June to August; be mindful of strong winds on the lagoon.

The Merkys is one of the most popular rivers for recreational kayaking in southern Lithuania, known for its clear water and forested banks. The river offers a mix of gentle currents and light rapids, making it accessible for both beginners and experienced paddlers looking for a scenic day trip.

Access. Multiple rental companies operate along the river, particularly near Valkininkai and Merkinė, offering equipment hire and transport back to starting points.

Notes. Best paddled from May to September; watch for fallen trees in the upper reaches.

Flowing through the heart of the Aukštaitija region, the Žeimena is prized for its exceptionally clean, transparent water and sandy riverbed. It is a classic touring river that winds through deep forests and is considered one of the most beautiful paddling routes in the country.

Access. Rentals are easily arranged in Švenčionėliai or Pabradė, with many operators offering drop-off and pick-up services along the river course.

Notes. Generally calm and suitable for families; excellent for multi-day trips with camping along the banks.
