Kayaking the coastline is an expedition into the unknown, offering a sense of isolation that is increasingly rare in modern travel. The winter months provide the most stable conditions for paddling along the arid, dramatic shorelines. You must be entirely self-sufficient, as there are no rental shops or support networks to rely on.

Access. Sea kayak rentals, multi-day expedition guiding, and small-boat support launches are organized from the port city of Massawa.
Notes. Extreme desert heat; best paddled during the cooler winter months from November to February. Strong offshore winds can occur; intermediate sea-kayaking experience recommended.
