Kayaking in Cook Islands
Including Aitutaki Lagoon and Muri Lagoon. On the map.
The vibe
Kayaking provides a peaceful way to navigate the expansive, shallow lagoons that encircle the islands, offering a perspective of the coastline that you cannot get from land. The water is most inviting and calm during the drier months when the wind is light. It is a very relaxed, DIY activity where you can easily rent gear and spend the day drifting between small sandy islets at your own speed.

The crystal‑clear waters of Aitutaki Lagoon are dotted with dozens of tiny motus (islets) that make an iconic sea‑kayaking playground. Paddlers glide past coral reefs, white‑sand beaches and vibrant marine life in a protected, shallow lagoon.
Access. Several local operators in Aitutaki town offer half‑day and full‑day sea‑kayak rentals and guided island‑hopping tours; no prior experience required.
Notes. Calm conditions most of the year; beware of occasional tradewind gusts in the afternoon. Best paddled in the dry season (May‑October).

Muri Lagoon on Rarotonga’s north‑east coast offers calm, shallow waters framed by palm‑lined beaches and a backdrop of volcanic hills. It’s a favourite spot for sea‑kayakers seeking easy paddling and stunning sunset views.
Access. Kayak rentals and guided paddles are available from the Muri Beach Resort and independent operators; launch directly from the beach promenade.
Notes. Very gentle currents; ideal for beginners and families. Peak tourist season (June‑August) can bring more traffic on the water.
