Kayaking here is the ultimate way to navigate the dense, winding mangroves and quiet estuaries that define the coastal landscape. The dry season is the most pleasant time to paddle, as the water is calm and the heat is less intense during the morning hours. It is a very accessible, DIY activity where you can easily rent a boat and explore the waterways at your own pace without any crowds.
Koh Rong Archipelago

This island chain offers crystal-clear turquoise waters and hidden mangrove forests perfect for sea kayaking. Paddlers can explore secluded coves and bioluminescent bays that are inaccessible by larger boats.
Access. Kayak rentals and guided tours are available from Koh Touch village on Koh Rong or from Koh Rong Samloem. Many local guesthouses provide equipment for independent exploration of the nearby bays.
Notes. Best season is November to May when the sea is calmest. Bioluminescence is best viewed on moonless nights.
Prek Tuek Chhu River

The Prek Tuek Chhu river winds through lush countryside and dense mangrove tunnels near the town of Kampot. It is a tranquil destination for river touring, offering a slow-paced look at the rural Cambodian landscape.
Access. Numerous rental shops and eco-tourism operators line the riverbanks in Kampot, offering both hourly kayak rentals and guided sunset tours.
Notes. The river is generally calm and suitable for all skill levels. Be mindful of occasional boat traffic near the town center.
Ream National Park

Ream National Park features extensive mangrove ecosystems and coastal estuaries that are best explored by paddle. The quiet waterways provide a sanctuary for diverse birdlife and offer a serene sea-kayaking experience.
Access. Guided kayak tours can be arranged from Sihanoukville or through park-approved eco-tours departing from the park entrance.
Notes. Access to certain protected zones may require a guide or park permit. Check with local rangers before launching.

This stretch of the Mekong River is famous for its unique flooded forests and braided channels that create a labyrinthine environment for river kayakers. It is a premier destination for those looking to paddle through pristine, protected wetlands and observe rare riverine wildlife.
Access. Guided kayak expeditions can be arranged in Stung Treng town, often involving boat transfers to the deeper, more remote sections of the Ramsar site.
Notes. Water levels fluctuate significantly; the best time for kayaking is during the post-monsoon period when the flooded forests are accessible.
Tataï River Mangroves

Located in the Cardamom Mountains, the Tataï River offers some of the most pristine river kayaking in Cambodia. Paddlers navigate through massive, ancient mangrove forests and past cascading waterfalls in a remote wilderness setting.
Access. Access is primarily through eco-lodges located along the river near Tataï village, which provide kayaks and guided expeditions into the deeper mangrove channels.
Notes. The area is remote; plan for travel from Koh Kong city. Best visited during the dry season for optimal water clarity.
