The Debed River cuts through a dramatic, steep-walled canyon in northern Armenia, offering challenging whitewater sections for experienced paddlers. It is known for its technical rapids and the unique opportunity to paddle past ancient monasteries perched on the canyon cliffs.
Access. Access is typically arranged through adventure tourism operators based in Alaverdi or Yerevan who provide shuttle services and guided whitewater trips.
Notes. Recommended for intermediate to advanced kayakers due to technical river conditions. Spring snowmelt provides the best flow.
Dzoraget River

A major tributary of the Debed, the Dzoraget River is considered the premier destination for serious whitewater kayaking in Armenia. The river features intense, continuous Class III-IV rapids set within a deep, lush gorge that is largely inaccessible by road.
Access. Paddlers typically utilize local specialized rafting and kayaking companies that offer multi-day expedition support and gear transport.
Notes. Strictly for experienced whitewater kayakers. Requires scouting and local knowledge of water levels.
Lake Sevan

As the largest body of water in Armenia, Lake Sevan offers high-altitude lake paddling with stunning views of the surrounding Caucasus Mountains. Kayakers can explore the quiet northern shores and the iconic Sevanavank Peninsula from the water, experiencing the vast scale of this alpine lake.
Access. Kayak rentals and guided tours are available from local outfitters based in the town of Sevan and near the peninsula. Visitors can launch directly from the public beaches or designated rental stations.
Notes. The lake is at high altitude; weather can change quickly with strong afternoon winds. Best season is June to September.
