The vibe

Lebanon’s mountains blend Mediterranean pine with ancient ruins, making a hike feel like walking through layered history. The best weather comes in spring and autumn when temperatures are mild and the hills are brushed with wildflowers or autumn colour. Trails are fairly popular with locals and some tourists, so they can be lively yet still feel like a community outing.

  • Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve (Barouk)

    Beqaa Governorate

Trek across the vast ridges of Lebanon's largest nature reserve, home to extensive protected cedar forests and panoramic vistas stretching from the Bekaa Valley to the sea. The trail network ranges from gentle forest walks to longer ridge traverses across high limestone peaks. It is a premier destination for well-maintained day hiking in protected mountain wilderness.

Access. Drive from Beirut to the Barouk or Maasser el Shouf village entrances, where maps and local guides are available at the visitor centers.

Notes. Entrance fees apply to support reserve conservation; smoking and campfires are strictly prohibited.

  • Qadisha Valley (Wadi Qadisha)

    North Governorate

Descend into the dramatic, sacred gorges of Wadi Qadisha, where ancient cliffside monasteries are carved directly into sheer limestone walls. Trails wind past terraced orchards, hidden caves, and cascading streams between historic villages like Bsharré and Hawqa. This moderate to challenging day trek offers a striking combination of rugged canyon terrain and profound cultural heritage.

Access. Accessible via public transport or taxi from Tripoli to Bsharré or Ehden, where several well-marked trailheads descend into the gorge.

Notes. Some trails are steep and exposed; proper hiking boots and plenty of water are essential during warmer months.
