The vibe
Hiking here feels like a raw, solitary encounter with ancient geological formations rather than a manicured trail experience. The cooler, dry months between November and February are the only comfortable window to navigate the heat. You will find yourself entirely off the grid, relying on local guides to navigate the vast, unmarked terrain.
You will need a park permit for protected areas.
Ehi Ousso

Part of the Tibesti Mountains, Ehi Ousso is a prominent volcanic peak that challenges experienced trekkers with its rugged, high-altitude terrain. The hike offers dramatic views of the volcanic caldera and the surrounding Saharan landscape.
Access. Extremely difficult to access; requires a multi-day 4x4 journey from the north and coordination with local Toubou guides.
Notes. Extreme heat, lack of water, and security considerations in the northern region make this a high-risk, high-reward expedition.
Ennedi Massif

The Ennedi Massif offers a surreal landscape of sandstone arches, deep canyons, and ancient rock art sites. Hikers can traverse the labyrinthine rock formations and explore hidden gueltas where desert-adapted crocodiles survive.
Access. Access is extremely remote and requires a 4x4 expedition from N'Djamena, typically organized through specialized adventure tour operators.
Notes. Requires a professional guide and self-sufficient camping equipment; best visited during the cooler months from November to February.
Zakouma National Park

Zakouma offers unique guided walking safaris through the savanna, allowing hikers to experience the park's incredible biodiversity on foot. The terrain is flat and open, providing excellent opportunities to track large mammals and birdlife in a controlled environment.
Access. Accessible via light aircraft or 4x4 from N'Djamena; walking safaris must be booked in advance through the park management or authorized lodges.
