The vibe
The trails in Benin weave through savannah and mangrove, offering a quiet, almost meditative pace unlike the high‑altitude climbs of the Alps. The best time is the dry season from November to March when the heat is manageable and wildlife is easier to spot. Most hikers find the experience fairly local, with small villages along the way and a need for a park ticket in the national parks.

Access. Begin treks from Natitingou or Tanguiéta, hiring a local guide from the cliffside villages to navigate ancient paths and terraced slopes.
Notes. Bring plenty of water and sun protection as shade is limited along the exposed upper ridges.

Access. Reachable via unpaved access tracks from the nearest regional town of Djougou, best explored with a local guide who knows the trail network.

Access. Accessible via park headquarters in northwestern Benin, requiring mandatory local guides and park entry permits arranged in advance from Porga or Natitingou.
Notes. Best visited during the dry season from November to April; guided armed rangers are mandatory for all walking safaris due to wildlife hazards.
Tanougou Waterfalls

A rewarding hike through lush terrain leading to a series of cascading waterfalls and natural swimming pools. The trail weaves through rocky outcrops and verdant vegetation originating from the Atakora Mountains.
Access. Located near the village of Tanougou, easily reached by taxi-moto or local transport from Natitingou, with local guides available at the entrance.
Notes. Trails can be slippery during the rainy season; sturdy footwear is recommended for navigating the wet rocks near the falls.
