The vibe

Submerging on a single breath here plunges you into a dramatic, high-energy marine realm shaped by deep upwellings and plunging coastal drop-offs. The warmer summer months provide the calmest seas and best visibility for extended sessions in the water. There is virtually no commercial infrastructure for this pursuit, meaning any breath-hold exploration is strictly a DIY affair for self-reliant visitors.

  • El Silencio and Punta Hermosa

    This stretch of coastline south of Lima features rocky reefs and consistent conditions for breath-hold practice. The area is popular for training in shallower depths and exploring the diverse coastal topography.

    Access. Easily accessible by car from Lima. Several local freediving clubs and instructors operate out of Punta Hermosa for training sessions.

    Notes. Surfing is very popular here; always use a high-visibility buoy to mark your position for boat and surfer safety.

  • Islas Ballestas and Paracas Reserve

    Known as the 'Galapagos of Peru', this area offers nutrient-rich waters with high visibility away from the immediate shore break. Freedivers explore rocky pinnacles and underwater arches teeming with sea lions and Humboldt penguins.

    Access. Access is primarily via boat charters departing from Paracas or Pisco. Local operators offer specialized trips for marine life encounters.

    Notes. Currents can be strong and water temperatures are cold; a thick wetsuit (5-7mm) is mandatory. Marine park regulations strictly prohibit touching wildlife.

  • Mancora Coastal Waters

    Located in northern Peru, these warmer waters provide a different experience with sandy bottoms and scattered reef structures. It is an ideal spot for relaxed breath-hold exploration and spotting schooling fish.

    Access. Accessible via local boat charters from the Mancora pier. Several dive centers in the town provide logistics for freedivers.

    Notes. Visibility is highly dependent on seasonal currents and plankton blooms. Check local conditions before heading out.
