Abaiang features wide oceanic passages with exceptional water clarity and rich pelagic activity. Breath-hold divers utilize the sheltered lagoon and deep channel mouths for drift diving and reef training.
Access. Accessible via a scenic boat ride or short domestic flight north from Tarawa.
Notes. Tidal currents through the main passage can be intense during changing tides.
Kiritimati (Christmas Island) Outer Reefs

Kiritimati boasts massive underwater drop-offs and pristine blue waters surrounding the world's largest coral atoll. Freedivers visit to experience deep offshore walls and pristine reef structures teeming with oceanic wildlife.
Access. Reached via flights to Cassidy International Airport on Kiritimati, with local boat operators providing access to outer reef sites.
Notes. Remote location with limited emergency medical facilities for diving accidents; caution is required.
Tabiteuea Atoll Channels

The deep channels and pristine shallow reefs of Tabiteuea Atoll present clear Pacific waters ideal for breath-hold exploration. Freedivers find untouched coral formations and active marine life away from major tourist hubs.
Access. Requires domestic flights from Tarawa followed by local boat transport arranged through island councils.
Notes. Very remote; travelers must be entirely self-sufficient regarding dive safety gear.
Tarawa Atoll Lagoon Reefs

Tarawa offers crystal-clear lagoon waters and expansive outer reef drop-offs with exceptional visibility exceeding 30 meters. Breath-hold divers come here to explore vibrant coral gardens and encounter cruising pelagics along the atoll's dramatic walls.
Access. Accessible via boat charters and local guides operating out of South Tarawa, where independent freedivers can arrange reef excursions.
Notes. Strong tidal currents can occur in the channels between islets; local guidance is recommended.
