Freediving in Iran
Including Kish Island and Qeshm Island. On the map.
The vibe
Gliding beneath the surface here is entirely a grassroots endeavor, far removed from commercial apnea training camps. The winter months provide the most agreeable conditions for holding your breath in the warm southern seas. You will not find organized schools, so any session relies on linking up independently with local watermen.

Kish Island offers warm, clear Persian Gulf waters with accessible reef structures and sandy bottoms suitable for breath-hold training. Freedivers frequent the coastal areas for calm conditions and consistent visibility, making it the primary hub for recreational breath-hold practice in the region.
Access. Freediving is organized through local watersports centers and specialized instructors based on the island who offer guided sessions and training.
Notes. Currents can be strong near the northern tips; always check with local instructors regarding tidal shifts.

Qeshm provides unique freediving opportunities around the Hara Forest and surrounding rocky outcrops, where tidal shifts create dynamic water movement. The area is favored by breath-hold enthusiasts for its rich marine biodiversity and the ability to practice in diverse, shallow-to-mid-depth environments.
Access. Access is facilitated by local eco-tourism operators and freedive-focused guides who arrange boat-based trips to the best reef and channel sites.
Notes. Be aware of heavy boat traffic in the main channels and strong tidal currents near the mangrove forests.
