Freediving in Hungary
Including Dorog Quarry Lake and Tata Old Lake. On the map.
The vibe
Gliding beneath the surface in crystal-clear thermal springs offers an ethereal weightlessness far removed from choppy sea swells. Autumn and winter mornings provide the most magical atmosphere when steam rises off the surface and the crowds clear out. You will mostly practice independently or join small, tightly knit local apnea circles who frequent these mineral-rich pools.

This former quarry lake is a premier destination for Hungarian freedivers due to its exceptional water clarity and significant depth. The site features a steep-walled topography that allows for safe, controlled line training in a calm, freshwater environment.
Access. Located near Esztergom, the lake is managed by local diving clubs that facilitate freediving training sessions and offer access to buoy-equipped lines for depth practice.
Notes. Water temperature varies significantly with depth; a thick wetsuit is recommended even in summer.

Tata Old Lake offers a unique shallow-water environment suitable for static apnea training and introductory breath-hold workshops. The calm, protected nature of the lake makes it a favored spot for local clubs to conduct beginner courses and technique clinics.
Access. Accessible via local freediving schools based in the Tata region that organize regular weekend workshops and community practice sessions.
