Freediving in Guatemala
Including Lake Atitlán. On the map.
The vibe
There is no recognized freediving infrastructure or dedicated breath-hold training scene for visitors along either coast or the major lakes. The deep, still waters of highland crater lakes hold potential for quiet self-guided training, but you will find no local clubs or operators to facilitate it. It remains an entirely DIY pursuit for adventurous individuals rather than a structured destination activity.

Lake Atitlán

A stunning high-altitude volcanic lake offering deep fresh water columns and a serene environment for breath-hold training. Freedivers visit to practice immersion and equalization in the clear, calm waters surrounded by towering volcanoes.
Access. Easily accessible from towns like Panajachel or San Marcos la Laguna, where independent freedivers and visiting practitioners train in the lake.
Notes. Altitude affects buoyancy and physiology; proper preparation is recommended for high-altitude freediving.
