Freediving in Finland
Including Hanko Peninsula, Kristinestad Coast, and Lake Pitkäjärvi. On the map.
The vibe
Freediving in these frigid, dark waters is an intense mental challenge that demands respect for the environment and your own limits. The summer months offer the only tolerable conditions for spending extended time submerged without extreme thermal protection. It is a very quiet, club-oriented scene where you are expected to be fully self-sufficient.

Hanko Peninsula

Located at Finland's southernmost tip, the Hanko Peninsula offers coastal granite rock shelves and clear Baltic waters. Freedivers frequent the area during summer months to practice coastal breath-hold sessions and explore shallow underwater rock formations.
Access. Accessible via local freediving clubs based in Helsinki and Hanko that organize weekend shore-entry training sessions and guided apnea meetups.
Notes. Water temperatures remain cold outside of peak summer; thermal exposure protection is required.

The coastal waters off Kristinestad feature rugged granite archipelagos and deep shelf drop-offs in the Gulf of Bothnia. Freedivers utilize the protected bays and open coastal stretches for depth progression and cold-water conditioning.
Access. Accessible from town via local coastal launch sites and regional diving clubs hosting structured breath-hold training camps.

Lake Tuusulanjärvi is a well-known inland training venue for the Finnish freediving community, providing calm surface conditions for technique workshops and depth clinics. Instructors frequently use the site for introductory breath-hold courses.
Access. Located just north of Helsinki with convenient public shore entries and local club facilitation.

The Åland Islands boast some of the clearest marine waters in the Baltic Sea, featuring rocky reefs, drop-offs, and historical wrecks. Breath-hold explorers find excellent visibility and diverse underwater topography across these sheltered island passages.
Access. Reached via ferry from mainland Finland or Sweden, with local maritime operators and freedive organizers offering guided coastal apnea excursions.
Notes. Weather and wind conditions can shift quickly; boat traffic in ferry lanes requires vigilance.
