Freediving in Fiji

Freediving in Fiji

Including Savusavu Bay and Somosomo Strait. On the map.

The vibe

Freediving here feels intimate and quiet, allowing you to drift alongside sea turtles in deep, protected lagoons without the noise of scuba gear. It is an activity best enjoyed throughout the year, though you will want to time your sessions for the slack tides to ensure the safest conditions. There is no formal scene here, so you are mostly on your own to explore the drop-offs at your own pace.

Savusavu Bay offers calm, protected waters with excellent visibility, serving as a hub for freediving enthusiasts looking to explore vibrant coral gardens and deep drop-offs. The area is known for its accessible reef structures and deep-water access just a short boat ride from the shore.

Access. Several dedicated freediving operators and boutique eco-resorts in Savusavu offer specialized breath-hold training, line sessions, and guided reef exploration.

Notes. Tidal currents can be strong at the bay entrance; always check with local operators before heading out.

The Somosomo Strait is world-renowned for its soft coral density and dramatic wall topography that drops into deep, clear water. Freedivers visit here to experience the high-energy current-swept reefs and the sheer verticality of the underwater walls.

Access. Local freediving guides based on Taveuni Island provide boat-based access to the most iconic wall sites, ensuring safe conditions for breath-hold practice.

Notes. The strait is famous for high-velocity currents; sessions must be timed precisely with slack tide.
