The vibe
Freediving in these waters is a meditative experience, defined by the silence of the sea and the lack of any organized training centers. The water is consistently clear, but you will find the most comfortable conditions during the transition months between seasons. It is a purely personal challenge, as there is no local scene or club culture to guide you.
Dahlak Marine National Park
Northern Red Sea Region
This remote archipelago offers crystal-clear Red Sea waters and untouched coral reefs with dramatic drop-offs. Freedivers explore pristine walls and teeming marine habitats far from mass tourism.
Access. Accessible via boat charters organized from the port city of Massawa, where local guides and expedition operators facilitate offshore trips.
Notes. Remote location with no direct medical facilities; strong currents can occur near outer channels.
Dissei Island
Northern Red Sea Region
Situated south of Massawa, Dissei Island features sheltered sandy bays and shallow fringing reefs that transition into deeper drop-offs. It is a favored spot for relaxed breath-hold sessions and coastal reef cruising.
Access. Reached by hiring local wooden dhows or speedboats departing from Massawa harbor.
Durga Island
Northern Red Sea Region
Durga Island provides clear blue waters and rich underwater topography, featuring sloping coral gardens and wall formations. Freedivers come here for serene exploration of vibrant marine ecosystems.
Access. Accessible via marine excursions and boat charters operating out of Massawa.
Notes. Exposed to open sea winds during certain seasonal transitions.
Norah Island

As one of the larger islands in the Dahlak Bank, Norah Island boasts extensive shallow shelves and abrupt drop-offs into deep blue water. The exceptional visibility makes it a prime location for depth and reef breath-hold practice.
Access. Boat transport must be arranged through specialized tour organizers in Massawa.
