Freediving in Comoros
Including Mohéli Marine Park and Ngazidja Volcanic Coast. On the map.
The vibe
Freediving here is a solitary pursuit in deep, cobalt waters where the focus is on the silence of the ocean rather than established training centers. The best conditions occur when the trade winds settle, allowing for smooth surfaces and clear vertical visibility. It is a non-existent commercial scene, so you must be entirely self-sufficient and comfortable navigating the coast without support.

Mohéli Marine Park

As the first and largest marine protected area in the Comoros, this region offers pristine, clear waters with significant depth drop-offs just offshore. Freedivers visit to experience the rich biodiversity, including frequent encounters with humpback whales and green sea turtles in a protected, calm environment.
Access. Access is primarily via boat charters departing from Fomboni; local conservation-focused operators facilitate freediving-specific excursions to the islets within the park.
Notes. Marine park regulations are strictly enforced to protect nesting turtles; always verify seasonal restrictions for whale interactions.

Ngazidja Volcanic Coast
Grande Comore

The coastline of Grande Comore features dramatic volcanic topography with steep underwater drop-offs and deep blue water columns. Freedivers utilize these natural walls for constant-weight training, benefiting from the immediate depth accessible from the shore or short boat rides.
Access. Several locally-run freediving clubs in Moroni provide guided training sessions and line-diving setups for visitors.
Notes. Strong currents can occur near the volcanic points; local knowledge is essential for selecting safe entry points.
