Freediving in Burundi
Including Lake Tanganyika. On the map.
The vibe
There is no established freediving scene here, and the environment is not suited for breath-hold training or recreational sessions. You are unlikely to encounter anyone else pursuing this activity in the local waters.

Lake Tanganyika offers unique freshwater freediving in one of the deepest lakes in the world. Freedivers explore the clear, calm waters near the Bujumbura shoreline, where the bottom drops off rapidly into deep, dark basins suitable for constant-weight training.
Access. Access is facilitated through local water sports clubs based in Bujumbura that coordinate boat-based freediving sessions to reach deeper water columns away from the shore.
Notes. Be aware of potential hippopotamus and crocodile activity; always dive with a local guide who knows the safe, cleared zones.
