The Bentota River is a classic destination for river-based sport fishing, targeting species like mangrove jack, barramundi, and threadfin salmon. The dense mangrove banks provide excellent structure for casting.
Access. Guided river fishing safaris can be booked through most hotels in the Bentota resort area, providing boats and light tackle.

Kalpitiya Peninsula

Kalpitiya is a hidden gem for reef and offshore fishing, known for its proximity to the Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary's outer edges. Anglers target large grouper, snapper, and various trevally species in the nutrient-rich waters of the Puttalam Lagoon and the adjacent Indian Ocean.
Access. Several kitesurfing and fishing lodges in the area provide boat charters specifically for recreational fishing.
Notes. Fishing is strictly prohibited within the core protected zones of the Bar Reef; ensure your guide is licensed and aware of current marine park boundaries.
Mirissa Coastal Waters

Mirissa is a premier hub for big-game sport fishing in Southern Sri Lanka, offering access to deep-sea grounds teeming with marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, and mahi-mahi. The continental shelf drops off quickly here, providing an ideal environment for offshore trolling.
Access. Numerous private charter boats operate out of the Mirissa Fisheries Harbour, offering half-day or full-day excursions with all necessary tackle provided.
Notes. No specific recreational fishing license is required for tourists on commercial charters, but catch-and-release is encouraged for billfish.
Negombo Lagoon and Coast

Located near the international airport, Negombo provides a dual experience of calm lagoon fishing for snapper and grouper, alongside offshore reef fishing. It is one of the most accessible fishing hubs for travelers arriving in the country.
Access. Charter boats and traditional fishing boat rentals are readily available along the Negombo beach strip and the lagoon mouth.
Notes. Avoid the monsoon months (May-August) for offshore trips; lagoon fishing remains viable year-round.
