The vibe
Angling along this Atlantic edge feels wonderfully raw, defined by massive swells and rich marine life crashing against remote shores. The milder winter months provide the most manageable weather for spending long hours by the water. You will mostly encounter independent surfcasters and local fishermen working the tides rather than commercial sport-fishing fleets.

While the core of the national park is a strictly protected sanctuary, the outer fringes and designated coastal zones offer unique opportunities for shore-based angling. Anglers target species like sea bream and croaker in the shallow, nutrient-rich waters that define this massive tidal flat ecosystem.
Access. Access is typically via 4x4 vehicles from the coastal tracks leading from the main road. Visitors should coordinate with local Imraguen guides who have traditional knowledge of the sustainable fishing zones.
Notes. Fishing is strictly controlled; visitors must obtain explicit permission from the park authorities and adhere to traditional, non-motorized fishing methods in many areas to respect the UNESCO World Heritage status.

The long, sandy coastline extending north and south of the capital provides ample opportunities for surf casting. Anglers frequent these stretches to catch surf-dwelling species, particularly during the transition tides when fish move closer to the beach to feed.
Access. Accessible by car from Nouakchott. Local tackle shops are limited, so visitors are advised to bring their own surf casting gear, including heavy-duty rods and reels suitable for the Atlantic surf.
Notes. No specific recreational license is consistently enforced for casual shore fishing, but it is advisable to check with local authorities. Respect local beach usage and avoid fishing near active commercial landing sites.
