Angling on Malta’s shores offers a mix of shallow reef fishing and deeper offshore chases, giving a sense of Mediterranean bounty that’s both familiar and distinct. Late summer into early autumn yields the best bite as species move closer to shore. Many visitors join organized charter trips that blend social camaraderie with the chase, while a few prefer solitary shore casting in less trodden spots.

The dramatic limestone cliffs and deep blue waters of Dwejra on Gozo provide exceptional rock and deep-water shore fishing. Anglers target amberjack, dentex, and various reef species in the crystal-clear Mediterranean depths.
Access. Access requires a hike down the rugged coastal paths of western Gozo. Suitable for experienced rock anglers with proper footwear.
Notes. Certain parts of Dwejra form a marine protected area; ensure you fish outside strict conservation zones. No special license is currently required for basic rod-and-reel shore fishing in Malta.

Marsaxlokk Bay offers traditional Mediterranean shore and inshore boat fishing amid a backdrop of colorful luzzu fishing boats. Anglers target species like sea bream, grouper, and squid along the rocky stretches and piers.
Access. Easily accessible from the shore or local fishing charters operating out of the Marsaxlokk harbor. Tackle shops can be found in nearby towns.
Notes. Recreational fishing from the shore is generally unrestricted, but certain marine protected areas or aquaculture zones require permits or have strict prohibitions. Check local Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture rules.
