As one of the largest reservoirs in the world, Bukhtarma is a massive fishery for zander, pike, and bream. The sheer size of the water body allows for both shore fishing from rocky points and extensive boat fishing.
Access. The town of Serebryansk serves as a base for boat rentals and local fishing charters. Visitors can access various bays and inlets by boat.
Notes. Fishing is open year-round, though winter ice fishing is a major local tradition. Ensure you have the appropriate regional fishing license.
Ili River and Lake Balkhash

The Ili River delta flowing into Lake Balkhash is a premier destination for targeting massive Wels catfish and trophy-sized Asp. The vast, remote wetlands provide a unique freshwater angling experience in the heart of the Kazakh steppe.
Access. Access is primarily via guided expeditions departing from Almaty. Local fishing lodges provide boats and specialized gear for navigating the delta's complex channels.
Notes. A fishing permit is required for the Ili River delta region. The season is best from May to October, with strict catch-and-release practices encouraged for larger specimens.
Irtysh River, Ust-Kamenogorsk

The Irtysh River near Ust-Kamenogorsk offers excellent opportunities for pike, perch, and zander fishing. The river's diverse flow, ranging from deep reservoirs to faster currents, supports a robust population of predatory fish.
Access. Local guides operate out of Ust-Kamenogorsk, offering day trips on the river and the nearby Bukhtarma Reservoir. Tackle shops in the city provide necessary local lures.
Notes. Standard regional fishing permits apply. Fishing is generally productive from late spring through early autumn.
