The vibe
Diving in Thailand offers a blend of vibrant reef walls and historic wrecks, a combination you rarely find together elsewhere. The dry season brings steady currents and excellent visibility, especially December to March. Dive centres are well‑established, so most divers book a day‑pass and let the pros handle logistics, though independent divers can also drop in with a park ticket.

A massive underwater granite pinnacle that serves as a hub for marine life in the Gulf of Thailand. The site is characterized by dense schools of snapper, barracuda, and the occasional whale shark cruising the reef edge.
Access. Short boat ride from Koh Tao; suitable for Advanced Open Water divers.
Notes. Depth starts at 14m and drops to 35m.

The HTMS Chang is the largest shipwreck in Thailand, a former US Navy landing ship measuring over 100 meters long. It sits upright on the sandy bottom, offering extensive penetration opportunities for experienced divers through its various decks and cargo holds.
Access. Easily accessible via daily boat trips from Koh Chang; suitable for Advanced Open Water divers due to depth.
Notes. Depth ranges from 12m to 30m; visibility varies by season.
Phuket Dive Sites (Racha Islands & Shark Point)

Phuket serves as a major gateway to premier Andaman Sea diving, offering vibrant coral reefs, dramatic drop-offs, and frequent encounters with leopard sharks at sites like Shark Point and the Racha Islands. Divers explore thriving hard coral gardens and gentle drift environments teeming with macro life and pelagics. Conditions are best from November to April during the dry northeast monsoon.
Access. Numerous dedicated scuba dive shops and day-trip dive boats operate out of Chalong Pier, offering daily two-tank and three-tank trips to nearby island reefs and pinnacles. Certification courses and equipment rental are widely available.
Notes. Depths range from 5m to 30m with moderate currents depending on the site. Peak season runs November to April.
Richelieu Rock, Surin Islands

Widely considered Thailand's premier dive site, this horseshoe-shaped pinnacle is famous for whale shark sightings and massive schools of pelagic fish. The site features vibrant soft corals and anemones covering the rock structure, creating a world-class reef experience.
Access. Accessible via liveaboard or long-range day trips from Khao Lak or the Surin Islands; advanced certification is recommended due to potential currents.
Notes. Seasonal (November to April); marine park fees apply.
Sail Rock, Koh Phangan

A solitary granite pinnacle rising from the depths, Sail Rock is famous for its 'chimney' swim-through and abundant marine life. It is a magnet for whale sharks and large schools of trevally and barracuda.
Access. Reached by dive boats from Koh Phangan or Koh Tao; suitable for all levels but currents can be strong.
Notes. Best conditions from March to October.
