The vibe
Scuba diving is virtually nonexistent as a recreational tourism product here, lacking the dive shops, compressor stations, and charter boats standard in dedicated underwater destinations. The murky coastal waters and strong tidal currents make casual holiday diving impractical even during the drier months of the year. If anyone manages to submerge with tanks, it is strictly an expedition-style undertaking rather than a bookable excursion.

The Bijagós Archipelago is a remote UNESCO Biosphere Reserve offering unique, largely unexplored Atlantic reef diving. Divers visit to experience high-energy marine life, including large pelagics and rays, in a pristine environment that remains off the beaten path for most international travelers.
Access. Access is highly expedition-based; divers must coordinate with specialized liveaboard operators or small-scale dive outfits based in Bissau that organize multi-day trips to the outer islands.
Notes. Remote location, requires advanced planning and self-sufficiency. Best visited during the dry season (November to May) for optimal visibility.
