The vibe
Scuba diving is virtually non-existent as a recreational pursuit due to the challenging underwater conditions and lack of established dive operators. The environment is better suited for scientific research or industrial logistics rather than leisure tourism. You would need to be entirely self-sufficient and prepared for extremely limited visibility if you were to attempt any underwater work here.

Lake Kivu offers unique high-altitude freshwater diving experiences in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Divers visit to explore the volcanic underwater topography and the distinct aquatic life found within this massive rift valley lake.
Access. Access is primarily arranged through specialized expedition operators or research-linked dive clubs based in Goma. Divers should be prepared for remote logistics and carry their own certification documentation.
Notes. High altitude diving protocols apply; seasonal water clarity varies significantly due to volcanic activity and sediment.
