Pedalling across the highland plateaus feels like gliding over a patchwork of grasslands and tea fields, far removed from the hustle of city bike lanes. The best conditions are in the dry season when roads stay firm and dust‑free. Cyclists tend to travel independently, sharing the road with locals and encountering few organized tours.
Lake Malawi Lakeshore Route

The route along the western shore of Lake Malawi connects various fishing villages and resort hubs like Nkhata Bay and Cape Maclear. It offers a mix of paved and well-packed dirt roads with stunning vistas of the Great Rift Valley lake.
Access. The route is accessible from Lilongwe or Blantyre. Travelers typically bring their own touring bikes or arrange rentals through adventure travel agencies in Lilongwe.
Notes. Traffic is generally light, but road conditions vary significantly. Best between April and November to avoid peak heat and heavy rains.
Mulanje Massif Foothills

The foothills surrounding the towering Mount Mulanje provide a dramatic backdrop for rugged cycling. The area features a network of tea plantation tracks and forest trails that cater to those seeking challenging terrain and steep elevation changes.
Access. Located near the town of Mulanje, accessible by road from Blantyre. Local guides are recommended for navigating the complex network of estate tracks.
Notes. Suitable for experienced riders; trails can become technical during the rainy season. E-bikes are increasingly useful for the steep climbs around the massif.
Nyika Plateau National Park

The Nyika Plateau offers a unique high-altitude cycling experience across rolling grasslands and montane forests. It is renowned for its remote, wildlife-rich tracks that provide a serene and challenging environment for adventure cyclists.
Access. Access is primarily via 4x4 from Rumphi or Mzuzu. Bike transport must be arranged through specialized tour operators in Lilongwe or Mzuzu as local rentals are unavailable.
Notes. Best visited during the dry season (May to October). High altitude requires acclimation; self-supported touring is challenging due to limited infrastructure.
